Breast self-exam
The time when a woman is preparing for the mikveh is a perfect time to do a breast self-exam. Mikveh use is generally at a consistent time of the menstrual cycle, she is undressed and inspecting her body anyway, and a mirror is usually available.
In addition to breast self exams, a woman should have a breast exam by a medical professional annually. Women age 40 and above should consult their physicians about the recommended frequency of mammograms based on their family and personal histories.
As part of the three-step breast health approach, Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends that beginning by age 20, women become familiar with the look and feel of their breasts through monthly breast self-examination (BSE). Komen for the Cure offers a variety of BSE cards in different languages and for specific populations. You can order a free BSE card. Please include your name and complete address.
You can also download and print BSE cards for yourself.
